This 14 day round trip to see the highlights of Colombia includes visits to the largest gold museum in the world; exploring and relaxing in picturesque coffee plantations; discovering the famous hidden tombs of San Agustin; time in Popayan, known as the White City; Medellin, the city of Eternal Spring; colourful Cartagena on the Caribbean coast.

  • Day 1 - Bogota

    Arrive Bogotá, meet your English-speaking guide and transfer to hotel x 2 nights in Bogota

  • Day 2 - Bogota

    After breakfast we meet our guide to start exploring the Colombian capital city.  We start with a trip to the top of the Monserrate Hill offering a spectacular view of the city, and then walk through the old town, La Candelaria, with its colonial architecture and the main square Plaza Bolivar. Visit the famous Gold Museum, which houses the world’s greatest collection of pre-Hispanic Indian gold artefacts and jewellery then end the day with a visit to Paloquemao, an authentic market place, where we will see and taste typical fruits

  • Day 3 - Bogota to Neiva (flight)

    On Sunday mornings the main streets of Bogotá are closed to traffic so we will go by bike from the hotel up to the more modern north of the city, also visiting Usaquén, a beautiful colonial quarter on the way. In the afternoon, we transfer to the airport and fly to Neiva. On arrival, private transfer to the Tatacoa desert, arriving in time to enjoy the desert sunset. Transfer to our hotel in Neiva x 1 night.

  • Day 4 - Neiva to San Agustin (by road)

    We begin a 4-5 hour overland trip on the road that follows the Magdalena River, to San Agustín. It is here that some of the most significant archaeological relics in South America have been found.  On arrival, transfer to hotel x 2 nights. In the afternoon we visit the Archaeological Park, including the Mesitas and the Fuente Ceremonial de Lavapatas.

  • Day 5 - San Agustin

    After breakfast we will head to the famous Strait of the Río Magdalena.  Visit the village of Isnos to see some of the most impressive tombs and statues in the country.

  • Day 6 - San Agustin - Popayan (by road)

    We continue our journey from San Agustin to Popayan (4-5 hours by road), crossing the beautiful Puracé National Park. We will pass through some typical Colombian landscapes such as the Andean cloud forest and the Paramos. Arrive Popayan, known as the White City, and guided walking tour. Accommodation x 1 night

  • Day 7 - Popayan to Coffee Region (by road)

    Transfer from Popayan to the Coffee Region with a short stop in Buga, where we will visit the famous Basilica del Señor de los Milagros. Continue to Armenia in the heart of the Coffee Region. 3 nights at a typical hacienda hotel.

  • Day 8 - Coffee Region

    After breakfast we visit the coffee farm right next to the hacienda and learn about Colombian Highland coffee production. In the afternoon visit the botanical garden and the butterfly farm.

  • Day 9 - Coffee Region

    Today we visit Valle de Cocora, one of the most beautiful valleys in Colombia. Here one will find the impressive Palma de Cera, the Colombian national tree and one of the tallest species of palm in the world. On the way back to Armenia we visit Salento, a picturesque village with artisan and crafts shops.

  • Day 10 - Coffee Region to Medellín

    Free morning to relax at the hacienda. Road transfer to Medellín (approx. 5 hours). Arrival at the City of Eternal Spring and check into hotel x 2 nights.

  • Day 11 - Medellín

    After breakfast we explore Medellín, a city which best represents the enormous changes in Colombia.  Visit San Antonio Park, Plaza de San Ignacio, the traditional Avenida La Playa and the Sculpture Park, which contains more than 20 Botero sculptures. The tour finishes with a trip by cable car to visit the Biblioteca de Espana.

  • Day 12 - Medellín - Cartagena (flight)

    Today we leave the Andean region  and fly direct to Cartagena on the Caribbean Coast. Private transfer to our hotel in the Old City x 3 nights. Cartagena  has the best preserved colonial architecture in the country and in 1984 was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the evening we walk through the beautiful Old City and along the city walls with views over the sea.

  • Day 13 - Cartagena

    After breakfast, we visit to the Convent of La Popa (the highest point of the city) and the Castillo de San Felipe, an immense historic fortress overlooking the city. Leaving the castle, we visit the monument of Zapatos Viejos, the “Old Shoes”. Rest of day free to explore or relax.

  • Day 14 - Cartagena

    Today is a free day, with optional tours such as a half day trip to La Boquilla, a former fishing village where you will be taken out by locals in dugout canoes to explore the mangrove marshes, or to take a boat for a group day trip to the nearby Rosario islands to enjoy the pristine white sandy beaches and clear waters. Cost of these optional tours not included.

  • Day 15 - Cartagena - Bogota and end of tour

    After breakfast, free time to enjoy the last hours in Cartagena, transfer to the airport and flight to Bogota to connect with international flight home OR departure to optional extended programme (see Optional Tour Extension tab).

Description
This 5 day extended tour can be organised all year round.  Visit the fascinating town of Mompox, associated with Gabriel Garcia Marquez and the famous Colombian singer La Momposina, and known as the town that time forgot on the banks of the River Magdalena. Continue to the tropical Tayrona National Park to relax and explore on some of the most beautiful wild beaches in the country, or hike into the park areas. The tour can run with a minimum of 2 persons all year round.

Itinerary

Day 1 – Cartagena and Mompox
Transfer from Cartagena to Mompox (approx. 6 hours), where we will spend 2 nights in a local hotel.

Day 2 – Mompox
Guided morning tour by boat on the Magdalena River to enjoy the marvellous nature surrounding the town, particularly indigenous and migrating birds. In the afternoon, a guided walking tour of Mompox including a visit to one of the small filigree silversmith workshops.

Day 3 – Mompox – Tayrona Park
Transfer by road from Mompox vía Arracataca to Santa Marta on the north coast and on to the Tayrona National Park.  2 nights in a beautiful lodge inside the park.

Day 4 – Tayrona Park
Full day excursion to explore the national park with a local guide.  Hike to the wild beaches at Cañaveral, Arrecife and El Cabo de San Juan. Free time to swim, relax and have lunch before hiking back to meet the transfer vehicle.

Day 5– Tayrona Park – Flight home
Transfer to the airport and flight from Santa Marta to Bogotá to connect with return overnight flight home.
