Hiking and Trekking in Cuba: La Comandancia and La Platica

Cuba has some of the most spectacular and unspoiled mountain scenery in the Caribbean. Our treks are mainly based around the Pico Turquino National Park and the Sierra Maestra mountain range in the southeast of the island, where you are surrounded by a range of tropical flora and fauna and a wide variety of birdlife.

This is a moderate level hike, suitable for reasonably fit people of all ages.  Please note that it is only available as an extension to an itinerary, and not as a stand alone tour.

“The visit to La Comandancia was very impressive and the accommodation and meals during the trek were better than I expected….especially the special care taken with carrying my eggs on the trail to accommodate my vegetarian diet…. the cooks were great and all such nice people.”

This 3 day trip offers fully guided hiking in the Pico Turquino national park, available all year round (weather permitting). The itinerary includes lower level trekking without climbing Pico Turquino, and lets you experience the natural beauty and tropical vegetation of the Sierra Maestra mountains and the park area as well as including a visit to the fascinating site of La Comandancia where Fidel was based in the lead up to the Revolution.

You are advised to bring a day pack with you for carrying items you may need on the hiking trip such as wipes, suncream, water and any energy snacks.  The hiking trails are generally good, so a strong pair of trainers or light walking shoes/boots will be adequate for this trip.

“[Caledonia were] the inspiration, the brains and the organisation behind my amazing holiday to Cuba.  I can’t tell you how little I did, other than talk it all through with Caledonia, and then arrive and have a fantastic holiday.  It all went better than I could have imagined, and I would definitely go through Caledonia again.”
